Honk for Hawk Eyes

For years I hunted for a vintage pick up truck. Something safe, affordable and fitting in the Hawk Eyes realm of esthetics. Something pretty but not delicate. The purpose being to load up the trunk with treasures and bring them home for you!

I had almost given up until last week. I spotted a two tone 1969 Ford Ranger short box on the side of the road. It had Hawk Eyes written all over it...

The search is finally over. She gives me a little trouble in the morning and she certainly takes her time on the highway but that's okay by me. She drives like a boat and makes a hell of a roar. She's one of a kind, a real gem and I just love her!

I have local love for Misfit and the lady behind the ingenious name. Amber Joliat is not only a fellow business owner, a neighbour, a customer but a welcomed chat on a slow day. I meet all kinds of people in this business, some are more charming than others!

Amber is always a pleasure to see and I always feel inspired after her visit. I don't know her well but I appreciate her grounded focus and confidence. She seems to be the kind of old school romantic, something I was starting to think our generation had lost completely.

Amber opened her own yoga space, Misfit Studio in the heart of Parkdale at Queen & Dunn. Although I haven't had the chance to visit, I've heard great things about the space and her classes. I'm looking forward to it!

I don't do yoga but when I do, it will be with Misfit and I will report back. Until then, I follow her blog for updates, classes, healthy tip and techniques.

If you don't already know him, I'd like to introduce you to my friend Jake. He owns MachineAge Modern, a well established shop on the east side of town. Jake specializes in modern vintage furnishings and gets his hands on some pretty special finds. Check out this Vladimir Kagan Sofa in store.
I just love it!

I think Jake and I make a great pair as we couldn't be further apart on the scale of "pickers". Jake goes for teak and I for country chic but we do share a lot in common. The willingness to drive for hours for potential finds, the thrill of a big old musty barn full of "junk", the hoarding capabilities as neither one of us could pass up a good deal on Pyrex but more importantly, an eye for treasure!

Unlike most competitive retailers, Jake has always been very supportive of my business. Being the new kid on the block, he has helped me along the way by introducing me to other dealers and giving me leads on hidden gems. Just an all round great guy with a keen eye.

Any business owner and resident in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood has been put to the challenge over the last year. We got hit with a recession along with everyone else but then we underwent phase 1 of construction. (Hawk Eyes view from last May).

With the worst part behind us and another summer of road works ahead, we are all thinking positively towards the future. Despite the noise and aggravation that lies ahead, I am personally looking forward to the new and improved street scape of Roncesvalles.

I am waiting in anticipation for expanded sidewalks, new grade level trees, more public areas and a new fleet of Bombardier streetcars.

I just wanted to personally thank all the contributors from Toronto Life for featuring their Favourite Destinations along Roncesvalles. We are all appreciative of the support and the acknowledgment.

A special thanks from Hawk Eyes. It's truly lovely to be noticed and mentioned. It makes it all worth while.

The street is back to normal for the time being and 3 hours of parking is FREE until November. Come on down and take advantage!

Sakura Hanami

On the West side this is a very special time of year. Late April to early May is the blooming of High Park's Sakura trees. For centuries, neighbours, visitors and appreciators alike have joined in the Japanese Tradition of Sakura Hanami, the "Cherry Blossom Flower Viewing".

It is truly spectacular and not to be missed. If you're heading over this way, here are some tips. Take Cherry Hill down from the West Road to Grenadier Pond and don't forget your camera. Riding your bike is the best option but if you plan on driving, don't get caught parking in the wrong spot. It could be an expensive day at the park. Star article click here.

Park for FREE on Roncesvalles. City Councillor, Gord Perks had our meters removed and parking is now complimentary up to 3 hours, until November! Grab yourself an ice cream at Film Buff or a coffee at Cherry Bomb, stop into Frock for some spring digs and be sure to pop your head in to see what new treasures I have found for you at Hawk Eyes.

Hawk Eyes, "a-must-see" says Colm

Just the other day I had a very special visit from the lovely Mr. Colm Wilkinson. He stopped in with Post City to say hello as he took a tour of the Roncesvalles area, one of his favourite parts of the city. Some of you may know him as the lead in The Phantom of the Opera or as Jean Valjean from Les Miserables. I'm personally a fan of his work from the Tudors where he portrays Lord Thomas Darcy in season 3. He has traveled the world, won countless awards and met some of the greats from Bill Cosby to The Queen.

He is currently promoting and touring his latest CD, Broadway and Beyond The Concert Songs.

In under 400sq.ft, owner Alison Westlake has transformed a

transient retail location, once home to a TV repair shop, into

a fresh & delightful flower store. The sleek marble counter tops

and white washed walls create a clean, contemporary back drop

for local and imported fresh cut flowers. While the windows are

lined with barn boards and the shelves are filled with hobnail

vases, the apron front sink adds a subtle reminder of yesteryear.

Surrounded by the scent of fresh lavender and beautifully

displayed on well worn antiques, there is a great selection of

fresh herbs, hand tied bouquets and chosen pieces for the home

& garden. With such a refreshing spirit and joie de vie, Alison is

sure to do well in our neighbourhood. Pick up a fresh cut

bouquet on your way home for $20 or she will happily work

within your budget to create something beautiful for any occasion.

Closed on Mondays but open 11~7pm Tuesday to Saturday and

12~5pm on Sunday. In support of a fellow entrepreneur and new
